My Favorite Slashers of the 2010's
What's good everyone?
As you can see by now, I love making movie lists lol. I often go through phases of wanting to watch a particular/specific set or style of films and I know I'm not alone so here we are! Before we get into it, let me get into where this list even came from.
Okay Storytime.
Netflix just released a trilogy of Slasher movies called, "Fear Street," that plays with different eras of the genre. It starts with the 90s, back to the 70s, and takes it even further back to the 1600s. So it got me thinking about my favorite slashers from each era and when I got to the 2010s, my mind kinda went blank. That being said, I took to Twitter and posted this.
Man did I get a lot of responses that made me feel dumb because there are some bangers during this era. So with some heavy research for the next couple of weeks, I'm here to present you 20+ of my favorite of the 2010s!
1. You're Next (2011)
An estranged family gets together for dinner, only for it to be interrupted by a group of masked killers. You've heard this premise before but the execution in this movie is top notch. This film feels so personal with it's close ups and hand held shots. It's so brutal and in your face that you feel EVERY punch, every kick, and every kill. Possibly the best on this entire list and well worth the watch if you haven't seen it.
2. My Soul to Take (2010)
7 kids are all born on the same night of a killer's massacre. He is caught and killed that night & before death vowels to return to finish what he started. 16 years later.... He's back. This is a pretty good slasher that is so of the time, but operates like a classic, "Who's the Killer," film. It has some truly scary moments, haunting imagery, brutal kills, & natural humor you'd expect from a Wes Craven film. A personal fav of mine.
3. No One Lives (2012)
4. Haunt (2019)
A group of young adults visits a haunted house on Halloween night thinking it's fun and games, but soon finds out they're part of a sick play that's been heavily planned out. Another premise that has been done before but the execution here is easily one of the best I've seen. It starts out pretty typical with things you've seen before that make you think you know what you're getting into; But when you reach the 3rd act, you're given a surprise that you definitely do not see coming that makes the situation even more terrifying. Another fav of mine.
5. See No Evil 2 (2014)
This movie picks up where the prequel in 2006, left off. The Killer's presumed dead body is brought to a morgue where he rises again to kill some medical students working the nightshift. While the plot is weak, the production value makes this one worth a watch. Not to mention the familiar scream queens Danielle Harris & Katherine Isabelle are part of the cast!
6. The Funhouse Massacre (2015)
7. Happy Death Day (2017)
8. Hell Fest (2018)
On Halloween night, a group of kids visit a horror theme park called, "Hell fest." What starts out as scary good fun, transitions to a fight for their lives when a deranged person takes things WAY too far. This one might be favorite overall on this list. Everything about this film works SO well, from the group dynamic, to the killer, the kills, the amazing setting, & a guest appearance from the OG, Tony Todd.
9. Hush (2016)
A deaf horror writer becomes the prey of a home invader but what the invader doesn't know is, there's more to her than what meets the eye. Making the lead deaf is such a small choice that makes for a really great concept. Taking away the sense of sound from her adds a layer of tension to every single factor of the film.
10. The Terrifer
11. Thriller (2018)
12. The Town that Dreaded Sundown
(Also seen in my Summer Picks) This is a continuation of the first film that released in 1978. The Phantom Killer was never apprehended for his killing of so many in the city of the Texarkana. & in this film, the Killer returns to continue his onslaught on the city. This killer is terrifying to me personally because he doesn't just stick to hand to hand weapons, he has no limits to what he'll use. It's something frightening about seeing a masked killer gun someone down.
13. The Final (2010)
A group of nerds lure some bullies into a house for a "fake torture,"prank that turns real when the true intention starts to shift. This is a slow burn but it is worth it once you finally get to the halfway mark and s*** gets real. Nothing like a good bully revenge movie!
14. The Den (2013)
A young woman studying the habits of internet users stumbles on to a murder. Thinking she was unseen, she soon finds out that the killer knows of what she saw and he goes on the hunt. This film is a thrill ride that starts out innocently and snowballs into insanity. The killer s attack begins small like just chatting with her in a typical way. It then escalates to that conversation getting creepy, to accessing her webcam, and builds so crazily, you have to see for yourself. Really great way to fuse the dangers of the web with a killer.
15. Chain Letter (2010)
A chain of murders by a masked killer is started by a chain email sent to one person and with these events taking place in a small town, word gets around fast. As you can imagine by the title, the killers choice of weapon are chains, so this makes for some really unique kills. One in particular that you see at the beginning and end of the film are sure to surprise you.
16. Most likely to Die (2015)
17. The Windmill (2016)
18. Halloween (2018)
I mean... C'mon. It's Michael Myers with a movie in the 2010s... He HAS to be on this list. Need I say more?
19. Trick (2019)
21. Silent Night (2012)
22. Husk
23. The Scarehouse (2014)
On Halloween night, revenge is sought by members of a Sorority for a prank gone wrong the year prior. The way the story is told from the beginning is kind of confusing but once it comes together, you realize how sinister a plan it is. To make the deal sweeter, it takes place in a haunted house and I'm a sucker for a good scary attraction movie.
24. American Frightfest
25. Scream 4 (2011)
Just like Michael, It's Ghostface in the 2010s so I have to make mention of this film on a slasher list.
26. Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)
Ok put down the pitchfork & torch and just hear me out! I know the vocal majority don't like this movie because it changes Freddy to someone else. Someone different than the s*** talking one line dropping Kruger we know and love. Totally understandable but for me, I appreciate that they went a different route to make a sort of, "else world," version just to change it up. In my honest opinion, this version of Elm Street is terrifying. Freddy being a predator adds a whole different type of horror to the character and his lack of wisecracking makes you focus on the monster he really is. I think they were going for a realistic take on the character lore and I think they pulled that off well. The way the warping between the dream world and real world is done masterfully as well. I'm not saying this is a perfect movie, but I think it's a cool and bold swing!
27. Candy Corn (2019)
Halloween Weekend has arrived and some bullies take it too far on their victim, leaving him dead. A traveling carnival comes in town for festivities and the victim is resurrected to take revenge. This homage to the retro slasher film is shot really well and has a great production and costume design, especially for the killer, which I'm surprised hasn't been done. A Halloween staple for me. The OG Tony Todd & Courtney Gaines make appearances as well!
Alright so there you have it! A long list of my favorite (what I think are the best that I know of) 2010's slasher flicks! Hope you were able to find something you've never seen! Feel free to comment on your favorites below and as usual, thanks for reading!
