What's good everyone?! Yes I'm like a month late but better late than never right? I honestly have no clue why I said I'm dropping a breakdown for each part every week. I knew I was too busy to commit to that so I'll stick to dropping each part a month apart.
Without further due... Let's unpack Part 1!
I love that Bruce is in the shot with the actual card. Doesn't seem like much but him being blurred speaks to the mystery of a man he is. They don't even know how he got there and a shot like this backs that belief.
I like the blocking in this shot. I'm not sure what that is in the window but it FEELS like a person watching from the outside & it provides a sense of uncomfortable tension. Like it's someone on defense in case s*** goes bad. Small choices in your set design are a great way to add to the atmosphere in a tiny way.
More shots to display how crowded the setting actually is. It's uncomfortably tense.
You're then brought back to the view from outside of the window behind Arthur. Which adds to the idea of, "So who is that looking in and why?" I also like that this looks like something out of a comic book panel as well.
Gods Amongst men. It's just a sight to see Batman and Aquaman stare each other down for the first time ever in live action. Not to mention the way this shot is framed is spectacular. That guy in the middle kinda looks like - - never mind.
"Most of the shots in comic book movies are done on a green screen," is what I was told recently. Well I beg to differ. Sure, the big fights that contain a ton of VFX are green screened but you can't get a gorgeous shot like this on green screen. Jason is hardcore to have actually gotten into that ice water.
I've seen the distaste for this sequence because it's uncomfortable to watch, but that's the point. It goes hand and hand with how people saw Clark in Batman v Superman. Arthur is a GOD to these people and this is one of the ways they show their praise. Folks show an incredible amount of devotion to a GOD they can't see, hear or touch; so I imagine this is how they'd react if a GOD were tangible.
Zack just flexing his filmmaking skills along with this beautiful scenery. This frame looks like something you'd see in an art museum.
The way the chants of praise transition into an eerie haunting memorial like sound is haunting (& brilliant). Martha looks heart broken and you feel every oz of that in this one shot.
You can't tell me this doesn't look like a page ripped straight out of comic book! I love this.
I love how much of a memorial service this sequence of Lois feels like. Perfect music choice accompanied by the slow motion and rain is a real vibe. You really feel the weight of Clark/Superman's death here.
Small choices like this viewpoint make so much of a difference in feeling and perspective. We're literally brought back to ground zero where it all happened. The depth of range adds another level of eeriness in the air.
Yet another shot that looks like it belongs in a museum.
"I'll take that as a yes." Up until this shot, it's been all about the "Death of SUPERMAN." This single frame snaps us out of that and makes us remember Clark. The Man of Hope.
Love the silhouette side of this shot that lets us know Lois is still in a dark place after the events of BvS.
As someone who has this comic still in the plastic (It's actually my Dad's but what's mine is his) I just think this is cool as hell to see. Looks SO MUCH better in the correct color pallet.
While we're on the subject of color pallet, one huge takeaway from this film, is the importance of vision, intention, & execution. This shot wasn't even in the theatrical If I remember correctly (If I'm wrong my bad). A scene like this doesn't just look cool, but it's a part of the setup. You live in the entire sequence longer, so you care more. When you take in this shot, it's utter chaos outside & he's the cause of it.
This shot in particular is one I did not like in the theatrical release. The color was terrible and made everything look fake as hell. It makes sense though because it was never meant to be bright with the contrast ramped up to 200. It looks SO MUCH better and I love it. One of Wonder Woman's most iconic shots.
Straight from a comic panel! This sequence is like watching Wonder Woman 3, especially having this movie release after WW84. Anyway, a shot like this really paints the picture of how powerful Diana is.
Here we are at
Themyscira (It's insane that all of this is in the first act of the movie). I just love how ancient and war weary this shot is. Besides the great blocking form the Amazonian's positioning, it speaks to how they prepare and execute during battle.
I love this shot of Steppenwolf and his crew from a far. This was cut from the theatrical and I feel like it should've been kept in. It explains where the others come from and also gives a look into what the amazon's do with they aren't training. Such a small shot speaks loudly.
"I've come... to enlighten you about the great darkness." Steppy shows up dropping bars on the their heads b lol. Jokes aside, Steppenwolf's design is incredible. Easily one of the coolest villain looks in any film. The VFX department KILLED it and ever frame with him in it, is a work of art. One of the biggest improvements with this JL.
I could be reaching but this shot to me is continuing the imagery of a character being surrounded by skulls/heads.
Another shot that looks gorgeous and mythical. The Queen mourning her sisters to protect the box.
Again, almost every shot of Steppenwolf is a work of art. He looks so much better than the other JL design. It's not even close to be honest. I love how his color also changes depending on the setting, so he's not always just silver. I also adore how his armor changes and adjust to what he's doing or feeling.
You can't tell me this isn't a comic book panel come to life. Look at the amount of textured VFX here. The misty boom tube, the goldish sky, the reflection of those things bouncing off the armor. A sight to see.
Another wide shot of Steppy ducking the smoke. Really love the scale of this frame to show just how many amazon's came to battle.
I haven't put a finger on it yet, but I feel like this image is symbolic to something other than death. It looks like some sort of badge or emblem but idk what. What do you think?
And like that, we're done. Are any of these shots some of your favorites and did I miss any you personally liked? Leave a comment and as always, Thank you for reading!
