20 Murderous Mother's Day Horror Flicks!
What's Good Y'all! Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers and your own mother. Yes you reading this.
You all know by now that I love themed lists, so I had to craft one for Mother's Day! This list consists of films that I've seen, liked, & specifically either have the Mother in the story as the villain, or they're perceived to be the reason of the terror happening on screen. So without further due, let's get started!
1. Mama (2013)
When a father and his kids go missing, the father's brother goes searching for them & ends up finding the kids in an abandoned house. Being the closest kin family, he's able to gain custody of the kids alongside his girlfriend. When they're brought back strange things start happening that no one can explain but the kids. I'm not a huge fan of the ending but the movie does everything else pretty well.
2. Hereditary (2017)
A suburban mom's life is in shambles after her mother passes, causing her family dynamic to fall apart. As the days continue, things get worse and stranger, as Mom receives new information revealing the family history. This synopsis is extremely vague but I really wanna keep it that way for folks who've never seen this film because DAMN, what a movie it is. This film scared the s*** out of me and left my jaw on the floor multiple times. One of the best horror movies ever.
3. Mother's Day (2010)
Some new home owners have friends over to celebrate the new accomplishment. It's starts out as a fun night but it's interrupted by a family of criminals, led by their mother, looking for money they hid before the house was sold. This is a pretty crazy one that starts out so innocently, but transitions into a different type of crazy.
4. Friday the 13th (1980)
We all know Mrs. Voorhees doesn't play around. This list wouldn't be complete without this classic.
5. The Monster (2016)
A divorced mother has her daughter for the weekend but an emergency cuts that time short, forcing the duo to meet the divorced father on a dark and stormy night. As you can imagine, their car breaks down on a country road, and they are then confronted with something you have to see to believe. A creature feature with some layers to peel back as you watch.
6. Blood Red Sky (2021)
An ill Mother and her son catch a flight to New York for a possible cure to her sickness. While waiting for takeoff, the plane is hijacked by terrorists & she's forced to protect her child when this "illness," takes over putting everyone in danger. This one starts out grounded like any other film involving hijacking but quickly takes flight into the the fantastical (all puns intended).
7. Son (2021)
A single mom and son just want to live a normal life but it unfortunately won't happen due to an illness the young boy has. What makes things worse, is there are people after her son because of this sickness and Mom being mom; she'll do anything to protect him. A wild movie that starts out one way and COMPLETELY changes in the 3rd act. when the pieces come together. This was a favorite of mine last year.
8. Us (2019)
Adelaide, along with her family, take a trip to an old beach house for a weekend of summer fun; but her past returns to haunt her when intruders show up seeking retribution. A wild rude of a movie that you won't see coming with some really creepy imagery and visceral kills.
9. M.O.M (2020)
Mom starts seeing signs of a psychopath in her son, including plans to reign down terror upon his school. Wanting to take action, she digs deeper to find more signs but clearly missing some she should've seen that leads to a unforeseen and unsettling ending. This film feels odd in it's fear and while it doesn't go as far, it feels like snuff film. It's a found footage style film so that adds to the realism/
10. We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011)
This is the most realistic film of the bunch and it's literally a mothers worst nightmare. Without spoiling it too much (because it's best to go in blind) let's just say the title of this film could also be called, "The making of a murderer and how painful it is."
11. The Babadook (2014)
A widowed mother unable to control her rage filled son, soon discovers that this anger is being fueled by something in their home. By the time she finds out, it's too late to be stopped, as you can see from this GIF. This movie is hailed as one of the best modern day horror flicks for a reason. It has it's layers to below the surface but man.... There's some scary s*** in this one and it's well worth a watch.
12. Hellbender (2022)
A mother chooses to live within the remote mountains because her daughter has an illness that can endanger other people just being in their presence . One day, the daughter sneaks off, meets another person for the first time, & from that point on, the domino blocks start to fall on what her mother's true intent is. A trippy coming of age story that is such a visual spectacle, that I don't wanna give up much more. This is another fav of the year for me.
13. Child's Play (1988)
Mom just wanted to get her kid a great birthday present and ended up bringing home Chucky. Unfortunately, this could've been avoided had she not try to buy janky a** products on a back block, but I get it! Anything for the kids!
14. Serial Mom (1994)
Mrs. Sutphin has it all. The big house, the white picket fence, a loving husband, a beautiful daughter, a creative son, and a knack to kill anyone who f***s with any of these.... Yeah you read right. This movie will throw you for a loop in the exact same way you read it. It's has the 90s charm of Dennis the menace, but throw in all the grotesque R rated humor and violence.
15. Pyewacket (2017)
A Mother/Daughter who's relationship has become strained since the passing of their Husband/Father. The mother can no longer take living in the house so they move to a different town. This of course, destroys the teen daughters life. As their relationship gets worse, the daughter takes the adolescent, 'I hate my parent,' to a whole other level.
16. The Cellar (2022)
A family of 4 move into a new house for a fresh start, despite their oldest daughter being totally against it. The day they move in, the parents have to leave their kids home alone for a business meeting and when they return, their daughter is missing. Her mother was the last person to speak to her and knows something was wrong, so she goes on the hunt to find her. This is a film ripped straight from the 00s and I love it because of that.
17. Scream 2 (1997)
I use to think everyone has seen all of these films but I learned this year with the newest installment, that isn't the case. To keep it brief, I'll just say that Sydney's mom ain't the only one who got some action. Honestly, the entire franchise could be a mother's day tribute since it all started with Mrs. Prescott.
18. Umma (2022)
A mom and daughter live a remote life on a farm due to an illness the mother has involving electricity. The mothers symptoms start worsening until one day, her estranged Uncle delivers her mothers remains to her house causing their lives to spiral out of control. This is a good haunted house story that's reminiscent of something you'd see in the late 00s. If you like those kinds of movies, this one's for you.
19. Carrie (1978)
No Mother's Day list is complete without Margaret White present to stab you in the back. Absolute classic.
20. Ma (2019)
A middle age woman with no kids of her own, decides to be the hip adult of the town by allowing kids to party at her house. This is their safe haven where they can smoke, drink, f*** & whatever else as long as they call her 'Ma'. I'm going to leave it there for those who've never seen this movie because it's quite entertaining and deserves a watch.
So there you go! 20 movies you can watch to celebrate Mother's Day for the rest of the month! I'm sure you'll find at least one or two you'll enjoy. Again, I'd like to wish all the Mothers a HAPPY Mother's Day! Thanks for reading and until next time,
Peace!
