HIM (2025) Movie Review + Favorite Shots & More Thoughts
What's Good Everyone - INT. Office - Day
Here's my Youtube Non Spoiler Review for you to check out to get the jist of what I thought about the movie. Once you watched that, jump down below the video as I give more non spoiler thoughts I've had since seeing the movie.
CUT TO:
CUT TO:
So HIM.... Whilst the harsh criticism this movie has received, I'd advise watching for yourself because my experience was quite different. I'm honestly befuddled as to why this movie is getting slandered so much. Are there things that could be done better? I mean, yeah but the performances from Marlon & Tyriq are so damn good, that alone dispels the idea that this is a 'bad movie'.
CUT TO:
As I've said before, I'm an extremely visual guy, so that's something that always catches my attention when watching a movie. I say that to say... the cinematography in this movie is gorgeous. It's all due to set design, framing, and very specific lighting to accent the colors.
[The camera work utilizes a lot of micro shots to up the intensity throughout the film. This shot is one of the first example we see in the movie.]
[For the imagery to be as wild as it is, the shot choices are clean and sterile. This shot above & below are the best example.]
[I mean, LORD! Look at the frame below. This looks like a freaking painting! With a setting this naturally stunning, anything added to the shot is icing and sprinkles on the cake.]
CUT TO:
If I had to make a comparison, it reminds me a lot of Suspiria (the OG. I haven't seen the 2018 remake).
Like Suspiria, HIM has main character wanting to become a professional athlete that enlists with the best training camp for the sport, only to wind up in hell. This joint has a psychedelic trippy drug induced atmosphere with beautifully demented imagery, that makes you question everything you see.
CUT TO:
[I love this frame for how it weird it is, yet has quite a bit of meaning in context of the movie. The fame, the paparazzi, the reporters, the pressure to be great etc. It's suffocating.]
[This is one of my favorite shots (above) in the movie. Having seen the film, I understand it more (which is one of the most weird and creepy sequences of the movie) but it's still creatively twisted. A shot like this says ALOT with or without context.]
[This movie is dripped with bright neon colors across the spectrum. That accompanied by eerie people and objects in the foreground are what add to the Suspira feel.]
CUT TO:
So all and all, I absolutely loved this movie and it's creeped into my top 10 of the year. I'm not here to tell anyone they're wrong because ultimately, art is a matter of perspective which is beautiful. That being said, put your own eyes on the movie and think for yourself!
Thanks for watching/reading & until next time.. PEACE!
